Radiation treatment, what it is?
Radiation therapy is a treatment from the three standard treatments that are used for treating Mesothelioma cancer patients and it is use with surgery and chemotherapy. It uses an energy waves for destroying cancerous cells in the body. The therapy treatment is use to reduce the future growth of the cancer and also the symptoms related with the cancer.
Radiation treatment is normally used as a healing treatment or a painkilling treatment. The purpose of the radiation treatment is not to cure the disease but to provide some relief from the pain and in often cases the Mesothelioma patient agreed on the radiation treatment. Well, the disease is diagnosed in the latter stages and till that time the removal of the cancerous tumors in the body is no longer possible. In such cases radiation, external radiation and brachytheraphy treatments are considered to be more useful as it just improves the patient life.
Types of radiation therapy
There are three types of radiation therapy external beam radiotherapy, brachytherapy and unsealed source radiation therapy. The treatment receives by the patient is depends on the factors such that the stage of the disease and whether the treatment options are practical or not.
External beam radiotherapy treatment
Most cases external beam therapy is used to treat the Mesothelioma patient, throughout this process the patient need to expose the defected area that require the treatment the source of radiation is directed to the affected area with this treatment the cancer tumor is attack by the radiation therapy and it limit the tumor to grow and spread in the body. However with the use of radiation treatment the cancer cells in the body is not completely removed, but this treatment are mainly used to give relief to the patient from pain and its symptoms like shortness of breath and continuous coughing.
Some time the external therapy is nearly helpful than it is used combining with the chemotherapy and surgery.
Brachytherapy treatment
It is also known as sealed source radiation therapy, it involves injecting the radioactive rods in or near the cancer tumors for removing the tumors from the body and also used for other types of body cancer such as cervical, breast, and prostate. The treatment delivers a high concentrated radiation beam to the affected part so that the cancer cells are removed. Brachytherapy treatment is some time useful because it causes a little damage to the cells in the body that are surrounding the affected area.
Unsealed source radiation treatment
This type of treatment is directed either orally or by injecting the solution in the affected part of body to cure the cancer cells; it involves the soluble forms of radioactive treatment. This type of treatment is mainly used for specific types of cancer such as patients with thyroid cancer they are treated by a solution of radioactive iodine. But there are some disadvantages of this treatment such as people receiving this treatment are consider a radioactive and are kept is special room for several weeks, and they can cause health danger to the other people, because of such disadvantage Mesothelioma patient are not treated by this form of radiation treatment.
Getting such treatments on the body is not easy for the Mesothelioma patient; hence these treatments are given to the patient by taking his health into consideration as external radiation treatment can some time be effective in such cases where on the other side the brachytherapy cannot be very safe. Taking Mesothelioma treatment is just another option. Some patient prefer surgical treatment option such that much cancer cells are possibly removed from the body, hence with this treatment patient can only feel comfortable but they are not fully cured.
